Scaffold safety checks to make before you start work

A practical checklist for site supervisors and workers in Malaysia on what to check before using a scaffold.

Falls from height are one of the most serious risks on any construction or maintenance site. Under Malaysia’s Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, employers must provide a safe place of work, and a properly erected and inspected scaffold is a big part of that when work is done at height.

These checks take a few minutes and should be made every time before work starts.

1. Check the tag

Look for the scaffold tag at the access point. It should show the scaffold has been inspected and is safe to use. If there is no tag, or the tag says the scaffold is unsafe, do not climb it and report it to your supervisor.

2. Check the base

Base plates and sole boards should sit on firm, level ground. Look for sinking, washed-out soil after rain, or missing base plates.

3. Check the platform

Working platforms should be fully boarded, with no gaps, loose or broken boards. Guardrails and toe boards must be in place on every open side.

4. Check bracing and ties

Bracing and ties to the building or structure must be in place. A missing tie can make a scaffold unstable, especially when netting or sheeting catches the wind.

5. Check the access

Use the ladder or stair access provided. Never climb the frame or bracing.

6. Check the load

Do not overload platforms with materials, and keep heavy items spread out and close to the standards.

If you need scaffolding that is erected, inspected and tagged by a trained crew, see our scaffolding services or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Who should erect and alter a scaffold?

Only trained and competent scaffolders should erect, alter or dismantle a scaffold. Other workers should never remove ties, boards or guardrails.

What does a scaffold tag show?

A scaffold tag shows whether a scaffold has been inspected and is safe to use, and when it was last inspected. If the tag is missing or shows the scaffold is unsafe, do not use it.
